One For The Vault: Maria Kirilenko vs. Vera Zvonareva - Beijing

Lets be serious here, 2010 hasn’t exactly been the greatest year ever for the WTA. Outside of the obvious injuries and ~slamless number ones~, the actual tennis has also been lacking. Watching two players play well in the same match has been mostly the thing of dreams this year.

Heard about the Beijing match between Maria and Vera a couple of weeks ago, and after checking out some clips and watching these videos, this is without a doubt one of the best matches of the year. It’s always so fun to watch Maria when she’s playing aggressive and moving into the forecourt, and of course Vera herself has been playing some top class tennis this year outside of finals. Here the pair combine to play some fantastic tennis, using the full court and really pushing each other to the limit in some gruelling rallies. Enjoy.

It’s also interesting that Maria has been involved in two of the best matches of the year (also the French Open third round match against Kuznetsova). I remember when she made the quarters of the Australian Open this, her wins were met with so much skepticism and ridicule. However, with some great tennis throughout the year, she has really showed us that she is a great player. If she can improve her consistency outside of slams, I have no doubt that she could wind up reaching the top 20 at sometime in 2011.

Gael Monfils Fights, Caroline Wozniacki Wins, ATP Beijing Seeds Suck

Remember their infamous French Open match last year? Well today Gael Monfils and Andy Roddick finally got that rematch. It was worth the wait as the pair put on a dramatic and thrilling three-set duel in the quarters of the Tokyo ATP 500. After squandering three match points at 5-4* 0-40 and then saving one with an ace at *5-6 in the tiebreaker, Gael emerged the victor taking the next three points to win the match and move into the semis. He’ll face Radek Stepanek who was handed a walkover by Jarkko Nieminen. Rafael Nadal is obviously lurking in the top half, and he is up against Viktor Troicki in the semis. A Nadal-Monfils final could be a pretty exciting affair.

Over in Beijing, Caroline Wozniacki consolidated her rise to number one by defeating Ana Ivanovic in the quarters. She suffered a dramatic injury to her knee in the first set but by the end of the match she was good as new. Ana was not impressed. She’ll face Shahar Peer next, with Na Li and Vera Zvonareva contesting the second semi.

The higher-ranked ATP players in Beijing weren’t as successful as Andy Murray, Robin Soderling and Nikolay Davydenko (AKA seeds 2-4) were crushed, winning a grand total of 0 sets between each other. Crazy. Full results below.

Quotable Quotes

Q: I have checked the results you had got at the Grand Slams. You actually made six times semifinals at the Grand Slam, but you were close to winning the title at the end. What do you think about in the future? Now you are 29 years old now. What do you think about in the future? Maybe you still have chance to win the Grand Slam?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: No, I don’t think so.

Ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch.

Caroline Wozniacki: Our New World Number One

Congratulations to Caroline Wozniacki. She did it, she’s number one. She will be the 20th World Number One in the history of the WTA rankings.

Of course with her 0 wins (or matches) against top 6 players, 0 Slam finals, and her game in general, she has been the subject of much criticism. But really, she doesn’t deserve it. Blame Justine Henin, broken glass in a Munich restaruant, Kim Clijsters, Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic, Dinara Safina, Elena Dementeva, Injuries and all the rest for her reaching number one. Not her. Right now the WTA is in a poor state tennis-wise and a player as opportunistic as Wozniacki is always going to thrive in these periods. That’s the way it is.

My one tennis wish for 2011 (outside of Tatiana launching a thunderous comeback, of course) is that the aforementioned and co. will all begin to play the quality of tennis that we’ve seen them play time and time again, and to play it consistently. Then we can actually have a tour with top players and quality matches for a change. Of course if that was to happen, Wozniacki would naturally be overtaken by the stronger players and we wouldn’t have to resort to chasing her off the top ranking with pitchforks. Here’s hoping.

In other (related) news, Serena clearly wants her #1 ranking back and has apparently entered into Linz next week. We will have to wait til Friday for confirmation but I, of course, will be covering Linz next week so I’m just trying my best to not pass out right now.

No, Maria. Just no: Beijing Round up.

So Maria Sharapova’s slump continued as she fell to Elena Vesnina 7-6 6-2 in the second round of Beijing. While it’s an encouraging result for Elena, can’t help but shake my head at Maria’s recent form. It has gone from bad to worse and I reckon she should just cut the year here and start preparing for 2011. She has a lot of work to do.

Elsewhere, Victoria Azarenka retired from a match for a change. This time with a thigh strain while up 6-4 2-3 over Timea Bacsinszky. This is the 7th time she has retired this year. I don’t even know what to think. Throughout the clay season she continued to play even though she was visibly injured. A lot of people thought that her decision to play was down to the WTA rules - specifically the 0s that would stay on her ranking for 52 weeks and her stake in the bonus pool would be withdrawn. Is this something similar to that? I mean not even Tatiana ever retired 7 times in a year.

Other winners were Ana Ivanovic, who defeated Govortsova in straight sets to book a third round matchup with nemesis Elena Dementieva. Kvitova again fought past a choking Kanepi and awaits Wozniacki. She has had two solid wins now, so maybe she can recreate the magic she produced at Wimbledon? Also, in the second quarter; BoJo, Peer, Vesnina or Bacsinszky will be in the semis of (PREMIER MANDATORY) Beijing. Yikes.

Novak and Andy: Bromance In Beijing

Novak Djokovic and Andy Roddick have had their fair share of drama over the years, but any animosity between the two is clearly firmly in the past as the two practised, press conferenced, chilled and had fun together throughout yesterday.
