Earlier on today, Tennis Channel broke news that Alisa Kleybanova, who has been absent from the tour since Madrid in May, has been diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkins Lymphoma cancer and is currently undergoing treatment in Italy.
Needless to say, this is horrible, horrible news. I was only recently wondering what had happened to her and hoping that this illness was nothing serious. But this is, of course, far worse than I could have imagined. Today also happens to be her birthday, and so I can only wish her happy birthday and sincerely hope that she can recover from this. It really puts so much into perspective, and hopefully the whole tennis community will rally round to support her as she faces the toughest opponent of her life.
She left a message to her fans today on the WTA site, addressing her illness for the first time. Calling her “strong” and “brave” would really be the understatement of the century.
