Calling all the lines of professional tennis

Ernests Gulbis Makes Us Remember….

That is, he made us remember why the hell we ever bothered to care about him last week by unexpectedly storming through to the LA Farmer’s Classic title. He knocking off Juan Martin Del Portro and Xavier Malisse en-route before taking out top-seeded Mardy Fish in the final. We’ll soon see if this is just another teasing flash in the pan, or if will be the humble beginning of something special. Make it the latter, Ernie.

Old Rivals, New Beginnings

Things are slowly kicking off in LA as second-seeded Juan Martin Del Potro kicked off his title run last night, defeating James Blake 6-4 7-6 to book a place in the quarters. He’ll face none other than Mr Gulbis who followed up his victory over Xavier Malisse by easing into the quarters with a 6-2 6-4 victory over Daniel Kosakowski.

It’s crazy looking at these two and seeing how differently their careers have panned out so far. Born only a month apart, at the beginning of their professional careers they undoubtedly marked each other as rivals. It was Gulbis who made the first move on the main tour by reaching the quarters of the French Open in 08, but while the following three years have seen, aside from a few bright sparks, loss after embarrassing loss, it’s Delpo who has risen into the top five and can count himself as a member of Maria Sharapova’s illustrious Grand Slam club.

Still, I don’t think this is as clear-cut as it seems. Both are in completely different parts of their careers to their teenage years, and if Gulbis can just keep his head together and work in enough successful droppers to keep Del Potro on his toes, I have this completely crazy, irrational, ill-advised and ultimately idiotic feeling that he could pull off the upset on Friday.

Needless to say, if the predictable result happens and Del Potro ends up dishing Gulbis a beatdown, I’ll delete this post and never admit to making such a stupid pradiction.

Ernests Gulbis Wins One! Whole! Match!

The proof:

From the sounds of it, he tried his hardest to choke the third set tiebreaker and was given the match with an atrocious backhand error from Malisse, but a win is a win and you can’t take that shining achievement away from Mr Gulbis. Now let’s see if he can (*gasp*) win two matches in a row.

Elsewhere, Ryan Harrison fought back from 6-7 2-4* 40-30 to defeat Ricardas (I WILL NOT call him Richard) Berankis 7-6(4) 5-7 6-3. Certainly an impressive comeback from Harrison, and also understandable that Berankis wasn’t able to close it out having only just returned from that pretty serious back injury. Even so, Rikkie B will be very disappointed with this. Thanks to his injury, his ranking has taken a massive plunge, with more points coming off in the near future. He has dropped so low that he’ll be forced to once again play in the US Open qualies.

Anyway, fresh off his first career ATP semifinal, Harrison is in with a very good shot of reaching two semis in a row. Now he just needs to put the twelve year-old on-court tantrums down and all will be good.
