Grigor Dimitrov attempts to plant Un Kiss on Gael Monfils at the US Open

Generally, French players tend to seal matches between their compatriots and friends with a peck on each cheek. Nothing serious or alarming; it’s just how they roll. This meant that after Gael Monfils’ victory over Grigor Dimitrov, Dimitrov who lives in Paris at the Mouratoglu academy, absent-mindedly leaned in for a kiss. But it all went horribly wrong.

Who knows if it was intentional, or rather if he was expecting Gael to turn his cheek which clearly didn’t happen – with Gael hilariously looking half-amused and half-confused as he leaned back – but one thing’s for sure; he will never ever live that down. Not with players. Not with fans. And most certainly not with me.

Also, I think it’s safe to say that Dimitrov has single-handedly destroyed any ‘baby Federer’ comparison from this point onwards. Roger would never.

So, the Jankovics and Troickis *apparently* want to murder each other

During my little blogging break, the Serbian media have been running a story about the Jankovics and Troickis who are alleged to be locked in some bitter Montague-Capulet-esque family feud.

“Viktor was having a massage, and and Snezana, Jelena’s Mum, stormed into the room and started yelling at him and the massage therapists, claiming that he can not seem to be in line for a massage before her daughter. Victor was then cursed and was really unpleasant situation – reveals a close friend of the Serbian players.

“In return, Viktor swore at her. Jelena’s mother then threatened him, telling him not to mess with her because she is from Zvezdara, and he answered that he wasn’t afraid of her threats since he’s from Dorcol.

“Several months later, Jelena’s brothers met and greeted Viktor in Miami, where they live, but he just turned away and wouldn’t talk to anyone from Jelena’s family.” – said a friend of the Serbian tennis players.

Regardless of whether this is true, I think congratulations are in order.

If it is true, then congratulations to Sneki for achieving the seemingly impossible feat of actually being crazier than any of us could have possibly imagined. I mean, shouting down a grown man and threatening him? Essentially saying that she’s from the ‘hood and people from her hometown will come and sort him out for something as trivial as taking her massage appointment? Crazy, crazy hoodrat behaviour.

However, the likelihood is that it isn’t true. Particularly as Sneki herself has apparently spoken out saying that there are no problems between the two families and that Vik is a great guy. But even so, the writer of this article deserves congratulations for pure imagination. It’s one of those things that you just *can’t* make up, and yet he/she has managed to do just that. Bravo.

Queen Lakeisha Steals The Show In Toronto

It’s not easy to steal attention from both Serena and Richard Williams, but that’s what Lakeisha Williams, husband to Richard and (three year older) stepmother to Serena, managed to do as she sprinted onto court hollering with joy following Serena’s victory. After grabbing hold of Serena’s dogs and parading them for the crowd to see, she then insisted on getting herself snapped with the champion while holding her trophy. All hail Queen Lakeisha!

Quotable Quotes: Robert Radwanski Being Stupid For a Change…

Following Agnieszka Radwanska’s decision to sever ties with her father Robert Radwanski after Wimbledon, Radwanski has recently been on the war-path in Polish media, criticizing his daughter for just about everything he can think of.

“If they will decide to split up with me, they will find out the truth – the truth of life.

“Agnieszka believes that those ‘clappers’ from (the) Polish Tennis Association are great, wonderful, brilliant and just her father is evil. (The) nonsense spoken by those “well-wishers” did its job. Agnieszka suddenly claimed that she was a smart alec and she stopped listening. Father imposed discipline, told her (of) all errors aloud. Yes, sometimes too ostentatiously but if the defeats became a standard I just was not able to do it in a different way. In one moment I realised that I banged my head against a brick wall. But I never was and will never be a clapper! So I say once more that all those arguments were arguments between player and coach, not daughter and father.

“Excuse me. But so far Agnieszka did nothing great. Yes, yes. Please don’t act so surprised! When I hear that in Carlsbad she achieved her biggest success in career, I just smile with pity. She just defended her 2010 points from that tournament and instead of losing the final, she won. And if she doesn’t agree with my opinion, let her win the US Open to spite me. I wish her that from all my heart and I will be really happy if she does! If she does at least reach the semifinal, then I will stand corrected with pleasure and I will claim that those changes brought something. So far I am waiting.”

Bitter. Crazy. Immature. Petty. Idiotic. Stupid… I could go on for years. My favourite line is actually the very first; “they will find out the truth – the truth of life.” Surely he realises how hard it is to take him seriously when he comes up with crap like that?

Needless to say, I’m so glad both Radwanskas have found the strength to say ‘no’ and distance themselves from their domineering dad. Let’s hope it stays this way.

Elise Tamaela Attacked, Knocked Out and Left On A Drip By Opponent’s Father

Yesterday at the lowly ITF $25k Versmold, 27 year-old Elise Tamaela was subjected to a brutal verbal and physical attack by a fellow competitor’s father, which knocked her out and left her on a drip in hospital overnight.

Quotable Quotes: Marat Safin Discusses Political Aims, Joining ‘United Russia’

We all know Marat Safin as the immensely talented champion, who thanks to injuries and a whole lotta laziness, will always go down as a great underachiever in tennis circles. After his retirement last year, most undoubtedly expected him to fall back into a chilled and laid back life, with no more troubles or toils to stress. But we were apparently wrong as he recently announced that he would be running for election into the Nizhny Novgorod region of the State Duma (Russian Parliament). Today he spoke to Er.ru about his political ambitions’

“I’m not a politician, I do not know how to throw phrases. I originally established primaries in order to talk to people about myself. If the people feel good about you, they will vote. We all have problems and it’s most important that they are solved and do not accumulate. For me, this is a new stage, but in this field, I would like to reach the same level that I have achieved in tennis.”

“Look what condition (sport) is in now in Russia. The results speak for themselves. [It is] due to the fact that sport is very expensive. And we do not have, of course, the infrastructure, the children were doing. Even grown-ups “

“We have a culture, to promote a healthy lifestyle. Parents instill in children a craving for sports. If the parents play, then the children will too. Hence, the more people involved, the more opportunities.”

I don’t know why I find this all so amusing, but good on him. He certainly sounds the part there and he has already done very well for himself early on, campaigning around his district and is already one of the leaders in the early elections, ranking third with 151 votes.

But the big elephant in the room is that he has stated that he will “most likely” join Putin’s United Russia. I don’t mean to get all political and melodramatic up in here, but United Russia is such an infamously corrupted, power-hungry and backwards party. It really cannot be overstated, and Marat joining them in any way, shape or form would be, to me at least, so disappointing.

Sure, Ryan. We All Believe You…

Ryan Harrison has recently been getting some well-deserved criticism for his on-court temper tantrums, and from the sounds of it, he ain’t happy. After more questions on the subject, he attempted to defend himself by bringing up the Serena Williams incident from 2009, stating that he would “never put myself in a Serena situation”. But not content with that, he followed it up the next day with this gem;

“To be honest with you, Federer, personally if he had a little more fire, it would help him get back to the top.”

I actually genuinely like this guy and his game, and my problem with the quotes isn’t that he he’s criticizing Federer and Serena or whatever, but rather that he is implying that his attitude is actually better than the two legends. That outburst will always be the nadir of Serena’s career on-court, but that was one isolated incident after an abnormal amount of injustices that were always dealt with in good grace.

But Harrison? Well, I’m no expert but I’d say that throwing your toys out of the pram multiple times in every match, regardless of whether the match is serious or just a ‘hit ‘n’ giggle’, is probably worse:

And as for the second quote, he’s pretty much suggesting that if Federer has *his* “fire”, Federer would get back to the top. That deserves no comment…

Daniela Hantuchova Looks To Get the Ultimate Revenge on Maria Sharapova

2011 has really turned out to be the year of cold blooded revenge for Daniela Hantuchova. First she got back at Karolina at Roland Garros for, well, being Karolina… then got her own back on Ivanovic in Birmingham for their infamous squeakgate 2008 Australian Open semifinal, and she immediately followed that up by picking off Venus Williams at Eastbourne for the first time in her career after ten straight losses, proving that nobody beats Daniela Hantuchova eleven times in a row.

Tomorrow she will be up against yet another old nemesis. However, this one is the biggest of them all. Unlike Wozniacki whose pure presence is enough to make anyone angry, unlike Ana who may or may not have purposely squeaked, and unlike Vinas who was just better than her, this is personal.

It all went down at Indian Wells in 2008. Ahead of their match, this is what Hantuchova had to say;

“It’s going to be an exciting match. She’s playing obviously in great form, so it will be a good test for me. I feel like I own this place.”

Maria appeared to take offence with that final line, and she came out the next day, brushed Hantuchova aside in straight sets and then rubbed it in like salt to a wound by famously shouting out “THIS IS MAIIII HOME!” both before and after the handshake.

So hide yer kids, hide yer wife and bring a video camera. There could be some more fireworks in this one.

Quotable Quotes: Florian Mayer Blasts Nicolas Almagro’s “embarrassing” Behaviour in Hamburg

Nicolas Almagro is widely known to be one of the most unpopular ATP players amongst fans, and judging by Florian Mayer’s comments on Almagro following his 7-6(5) 7-6(3) loss to the Spaniard, the feeling is shared amongst his fellow players;

“His behaviour was embarrassing. This has nothing to do with tennis. If I did something like that, I would have felt ashamed. He was quite rightly booed at the end. Spitting and insulting the audience is not right at all”

Some may dismiss these comments as sour grapes from Mayer, but he’s completely right. Almagro was his usual cowardly self out there today – trying to influence linespeople and the umpire, shouting at members of the crowd, attempting to bully Mayer by shouting loud after winning points and laughing at Mayer after every one of his unforced errors, and so on.

It was funny because for the longest time, the crowd were attempting to be as fair as possible towards Almagro. However it got to the point where it would have almost been shameful for them not to stick up for their countryman by booing Almagro, and boo him they did. They booed and jeered his winning points, cheered his errors and double faults and even clapped enthusiastically on missed first serves. Almagro was furious afterwards, and as he left the court to a chorus of boos, he shouted and gestured furiously to the crowd and specific members of the crowd. I didn’t see any spitting, but it really wouldn’t be much of a surprise.

Let’s just hope that Verdasco can put a stop to Almagro’s antics and take out the trash tomorrow when he faces his countryman tomorrow.

Tennis Players On Twitter: They’re Just Like Us

They RAGE:

They rant:

And they dig holes so deep that they might as well just jump in and let the ground swallow them up:

Oh, Karolina.
