Safin has got to be one of the most overrated players along with Nalbandian.
Anyway, I feel like Gulbis is just playing tennis for “fun.” He doesn’t come across as someone who really wants to have an impact on the sport, or at least, have a decent career. And who can blame when he could just go home in Riga and sleep with his family’s billions.
I am a huge supporter of both Marat and Ernests, though I have to agree that Marat had much more reason for a laid back-attitude after winning two grand slam titles. But I do think that Gulbis uses his image of being lazy to hide his mental weakness which is much more responsible for his early losses at various tounaments. I saw him at Roland Garros as well and it was obvious that he was the more talented player. He just didn’t convert any of his break points and lost his focus too quickly. There is one more thing I have to say regarding his team: though I don’t like the coaches and family members who shout at the top of their lungs to motivate the players it was very disappointing to see that really nothing came from Ernests’ box – his father and his coaches looked just as helpless and depressed as Ernests himself – no encouraging nod or positivity at all. Perhaps Ernests would be far better of with an old school coach. Anyway, let’s see how he is doing on grass this year…
