Pingback: Tweets that mention Gael Monfils: Is It Time? | Foot Fault! -- Topsy.com
I watched pretty much all of Monfil’s matches and I have to say that the diving, chest pounding, “allez”s and random shot choices were all there. He just happened to play players who were making worse choices on big points than him! I guess that’s what happens when its the end of the season, it’s your home tournament and your opponents have better things to do in 2 weeks time. Though I have to admit he was surprisingly calm in that Federer match.
That said, it’s obvious, as you mentioned, that Monfils has amazing potential that he is unable or unwilling to fulfill. But it occurred to me watching him this past week that perhaps being number one or being a grand slam champion is not his ambition. Everyone assumes that winning a slam or being perceived as the best player at the moment or of all time is the ultimate goal, but I suspect that maybe, just maybe, for some players it is something else that fulfills them… You just have to look at what playing, winning and losing in Paris meant to him.
